Subaru Unleashes Impreza WRX STI Limited for 2007

Less Show, Same Go - Leather Interior, Power Moonroof - Only 800 Numbered Units Available

NEW YORK, April 13, 2006 – Subaru of America, Inc. today unveiled the 2007 Impreza WRX STI Limited model at the New York International Auto Show. The new edition of the road-conquering Impreza WRX STI packages greater comfort and refinement with subtler exterior styling, but does not sacrifice the performance of this street legend.

The WRX STI Limited will be available in the fall in a limited run of 800 numbered units, 400 in Satin White Pearl and 400 in Urban Gray Metallic.

The 2007 WRX STI Limited delivers all the power and performance of the standard model. This new limited-edition version adds a layer of refinement and design detail enhancements targeted at a new group of driving enthusiasts looking for supercar performance but with an understated demeanor. Designed by Subaru Tecnica International (STI), the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd., the WRX STI Limited is descended from the Subaru WRC Rally car.

“The WRX STI redefined the performance car category when it was introduced in 2004. We know some enthusiasts have resisted the temptation to buy one simply because they want more everyday driving comfort and refinement, along with less aggressive styling,” said Fred Adcock, executive vice president, Subaru of America. “Now, with the STI’s reputation for pure performance unquestioned, we recognized an opportunity to broaden the car’s appeal.”

Subaru Impreza Earns IIHS "Top Safety Pick Gold" Award

2006 Subaru Impreza receives highest possible safety rating from IIHS for frontal, side and rear-impact crash tests

CHERRY HILL, N.J.,April 16, 2006 – Subaru of America, Inc. today announced that the 2006 Subaru Impreza has earned the highest rating in the recent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash tests. The 2006 Subaru Impreza received “GOOD” ratings in the frontal, side and rear-impact crash tests for both the driver and passenger seating positions. Based on this performance, the IIHS gave the 2006 Impreza the coveted “Top Safety Pick Gold” award calling it “a gold standard” among small cars.

The IIHS Top Safety Pick award recognizes car designs that afford the best protection for people in front, side and rear crashes. This award provides consumers with an overall vehicle assessment based on all three tests.

“We are so pleased that the 2006 Impreza has added the IIHS Top Safety Pick Gold award to the brand’s long list of safety accolades,” said Fred Adcock, executive vice president, Subaru of America, Inc. “Subaru provides customers with a fun-to-drive vehicle that sets the gold standard for safety at a tremendous value.  That’s what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.”

In its report, the IIHS highlighted the reinforced pillar behind the rear passenger door and standard side airbags of the 2006 Subaru Impreza. They also said the active head restraints “do a better job” than those in other small cars.

Can you feel three horsepower?

By DAVE VANDERWERP October 2005

Some gearheads might question the wisdom involved in increasing an engine's horsepower from 227 to 230, which is the strange case before us with the 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX sedan and wagon.

But this also comes with a displacement increase of half a liter, from 2.0 to 2.5, and a torque bonus of 18 pound-feet, now totaling 235. The newfound power and torque are also available at lower rpm, eliminating much of the lifeless feel the WRX had before the turbo came bursting into the room around 4000 rpm.The new WRX has slightly larger brakes all around with—oh, wow!—red calipers, standard 17-inch wheels (an inch larger than the last car's), a slicker-operating, shorter-throw five-speed manual, and a slightly quicker steering ratio.

Visual tweaks involve restyled taillights and a new front end that has some resemblance to the B9 Tribeca's snout. This quite possibly makes the unlovely WRX even more so, but we've always accepted this ugly but fleet-footed duck.

2006 Subaru Forester XT Test Drive and Review

First Glance at the 2006 Subaru Forester XT

The Subaru Forester is the anti-road hog’s SUV. Although compact on the outside, it has immense useable interior space; probably more than many of the big momma SUVs. The XT is the hotrod Forester. Its new turbocharged Boxer 4-cylinder engine produces supercar numbers. Superb symmetrical full time AWD keeps the beefy tires on the tarmac. The XT is a WRX without the wing. But (sob!) it still has the boy racer air scoop. Gas mileage: 19/25 for the five-speed manual transmission Forester, 21/26 for the automatic transmission. MSRP: $27,895 for the five-speed manual transmission and $28,695 for the automatic transmission. Warranty: 3/36,000.

Even though the 2006 Forester is completely new from the A-pillar (windshield) forward, it somehow manages to look very familiar. Perhaps it’s the turbo air scoop, which has been carried over from previous turbo models. Though tasteless to my middle-aged eyes, it’s quite functional and is required to supply fresh air to the intercooler.
